A contemporary interpretation of the traditional Japanese koinobori by Nakagawa Masashichi Shoten. The Japanese design company founded in Nara in 1716, known for combining traditional Japanese craft techniques with contemporary everyday objects. This particular koinobori features three stylised carp made from cotton fabric and suspended together from a simple wooden bar, allowing the piece to be displayed like a textile wall hanging.
The fabric is produced using chusen, a traditional Japanese resist-dyeing technique commonly associated with tenugui cloth. Dye penetrates the fabric from both sides, giving the blue, vermilion and dark navy carp a soft, distinctive finish. Koinobori are traditionally displayed around Children's Day on 5 May, symbolising wishes for children's health and growth. However due to its size and contemporary stye it allows for year round display.
