Published annually by the Finnish Foreign Trade Association, Design in Finland was an English-language series created to introduce Finnish design and industry to an international audience. Running from 1961 to 2003, the annuals documented the changing landscape of Finnish design across furniture, interiors, textiles, glass and ceramics, architecture, fashion and industrial design.
The original issues we stock at Helsinki Playground from the 1970s and 1980s offer a fascinating visual record of Finnish design as it evolved over the years. Alongside editorial features and photography, the magazines contain period advertising from Finnish manufacturers and design companies, making each issue a snapshot of the graphic design, products and visual culture of its year. Iconic Finnish brands such as Artek, Marimekko, Vuokko, Decembre, Arabia, IITTALA, aarikka, Fiskars and more all make an appearance. The magazines document everything from architecture and furniture to fashion, medical equipment and industrial products.
