Published in 1989, Scandinavia is a photographic journey through the landscapes, cities and culture of Northern Europe. Written by Annelise Klucks, the book presents Scandinavia through large-format colour photography, moving between dramatic natural landscapes and the region's built environment and everyday life.
A wonderfully period piece of late-1980s travel publishing, with saturated colour photography and graphic typography. The cover features the dramatic landscape of Geirangerfjord, Norway, making the book as much a visual object as a portrait of Scandinavia at the end of the 1980s.
There is a chapter on Helsinki and Finland, despite been in the Nordics.
Here at Helsinki Playground we particually love the use of the playful typography on the cover. Often associated with the likes of the hippie modernism movement.
